Grounds for getting a Residence Permit in Ukraine

For obtaining of the residence permit in Ukraine, you will need one of official grounds for registration of the permit. As a matter of fact it is the reason which will allow you to remain in Ukraine on the lawful bases.
Today we will talk about the most common grounds for obtaining a residence permit and how the procedure for each of them is different.
1. Getting a Residence Permit for the purpose of employment:
а) Residence Permit on the basis of a work permit;
This is your option if you have received an offer of cooperation from the firm located in Ukraine.
This procedure involves several stages:
- Getting a work permit;
- Submitting documents for a residence permit.
Documents required to obtain a Residence Permit due to employment:
- The original work permit (may be obtained with our lawyers’ assistance);
- A company’s obligation letter;
- The original passport with the Ukrainian visa (except for citizens of CIS countries and Georgia) and a stamp about crossing the border of Ukraine, after the date of obtaining a work permit;
- A health insurance policy (may be obtained by our lawyers);
- A receipt for the administrative fee paid;
- 4 photos (3.5*4.5).
б) Residence permit for the purpose of starting up a company.
This option will allow you to get a residence permit for sure, as well as to start your life in Ukraine with a ready-made company to do business.
The entire procedure will be as follows:
- Getting an ID number in Ukraine;
- Registration of a legal entity (LLC) founded by a foreigner. At this stage, we register LLC in Ukraine with a temporary Ukrainian director, who will be later replaced by our Client;
- Obtaining a work permit for a foreigner by the employer (registered LLC);
- Replacing the general director with a foreigner;
- Obtaining a Temporary Residence Permit;
- Registration of place of residence in Ukraine.

2. Getting a Residence Permit due to marriage
This option suits you if your spouse is a citizen of Ukraine.
The procedure provides for the submission of the following document:
- The certificate of marriage with a citizen of Ukraine.
- The original passport with a Ukrainian D-type visa (except for citizens of CIS countries and Georgia) and a stamp about crossing the border of Ukraine.
Note: If the marriage was concluded outside the territory of Ukraine, the document must be duly legalized.
- 4 color matte photos of a foreigner (3.5 x 4.5 cm).
- A health insurance policy (it can be obtained by our lawyers).
- A copy of the TIN certificate (our lawyers can help you with it).

3. Getting a Residence Permit by volunteering
To begin with, the volunteering organization in which the foreigner will participate must be included in the Register of Volunteering Organizations on the website of the Ministry of Social Policy. Then you shall obtain an invitation letter (application) from the volunteering organization, which will be the ground for obtaining a Residence Permit.
The documents to be submitted for a Residence Permit by volunteering include:
- A non-resident’s passport (with notarized translation);
- A D-type visa;
- An invitation letter of the host party (a volunteering organization responsible for program implementation);
- A certificate of state registration of the volunteering organization (original and copy);
- A health insurance policy (from 1 to 3 years);
- A receipt for the state fee paid (UAH 2,000 for a residence permit).
- 4 matte photos (3.5x4.5 cm);

4. Getting a Residence Permit due to employment in representative offices of foreign companies
This Residence Permit suits those who are going to come to Ukraine and stay in its territory for a long time due to work in a representative office of a foreign company.
This type of a Residence Permit is issued for one year only.
The procedure provides for the submission of the following documents:
- The original and a copy of the certificate of registration of the representative office;
- Original passport with a Ukrainian D-type visa (except for citizens of CIS countries and Georgia) and a stamp about crossing the border of Ukraine (notarized translation);
- A health insurance policy;
- A copy of the TIN certificate;
- A receipt for payment of administrative fees for a residence permit;
- An invitation letter of the respective representative office of the foreign company in Ukraine and a service card, which must be obtained at the Ministry of Economic Development of Ukraine (our lawyer can assist in obtaining service cards).
5. Getting a Residence Permit due to other grounds
There are also a number of other grounds that can be used to obtain a Residence Permit, including:
- For the purpose of study at Ukrainian universities;
- Visiting Ukraine to preach religious beliefs;
- For the purpose of work in branches and representative offices accredited by the Ministry of Justice;
- Visiting Ukraine to perform scientific, cultural, educational, volunteering activities under international agreements or special programs;
- For the purpose of work as a correspondent or representative of foreign media;
- On the ground of investments.
