Terms and grounds of obtaining the perminent residence permit in Ukraine

Obtaining permanent residence in Ukraine can be an attractive option for foreign nationals who wish to reside in the country for a long-term period. The Ukrainian government provides several grounds for obtaining permanent residence, and it is essential to understand the terms and conditions that need to be fulfilled to obtain this status.

The grounds for obtaining permanent residence in Ukraine are as follows:

1. Employment

Foreign nationals who have a job offer from a Ukrainian company can obtain permanent residence in Ukraine. The employer must apply for a work permit on behalf of the employee and also submit an application for a permanent residence permit to the State Migration Service of Ukraine.

2. Investment

Foreign nationals who invest a minimum of 0,000 in the Ukrainian economy can apply for permanent residence. The investment must be made in the form of a business or real estate, and the foreign national must provide evidence of the investment.

3. Family reunification

Foreign nationals who are married to Ukrainian citizens or have close relatives (parents, children, and siblings) who are Ukrainian citizens can apply for permanent residence.

4. Education

Foreign nationals who study at Ukrainian universities can apply for permanent residence after completing their studies. The student must have a valid student visa and a residence permit while studying in Ukraine.

The terms and conditions for obtaining permanent residence in Ukraine


1. Continuous residence

To obtain permanent residence, a foreign national must have resided in Ukraine on a legal basis for at least five years continuously. The residence must be uninterrupted, and the foreign national must not have left Ukraine for a period of more than six months in each year.

2. Legal status

Foreign nationals must have a legal status in Ukraine to apply for permanent residence. This means that they must have a valid visa, a residence permit, or a work permit, and their stay in Ukraine must not violate the country's immigration laws.

3. No criminal record

Foreign nationals who apply for permanent residence must not have a criminal record in Ukraine or their home country.

4. Health insurance

Foreign nationals must have health insurance coverage in Ukraine to apply for permanent residence.

5. Knowledge of the Ukrainian language

Foreign nationals must demonstrate basic knowledge of the Ukrainian language to obtain permanent residence. This requirement may be waived for individuals who are under 18 years of age or have a medical condition that makes it difficult to learn the language.

Documents needed for the permanent residence obtainment in Ukraine

  1. Application form: A completed application form is required, which can be obtained from the State Migration Service of Ukraine.

  7. Marriage certificate or birth certificate, if applicable: If the applicant is applying for a permanent residence permit on the basis of family reunification, a marriage certificate or birth certificate showing the relationship to the Ukrainian citizen is required.
  8. Health insurance: Health insurance coverage in Ukraine is required.


Processing time:

The processing time for a permanent residence permit in Ukraine can take up to one year. However, the exact processing time may vary depending on the volume of applications being processed by the State Migration Service of Ukraine.

During the processing period, applicants may be required to attend an interview at the State Migration Service of Ukraine, where they may be asked questions about their background, intentions, and financial situation.

In some cases, the State Migration Service of Ukraine may also request additional documents or information from the applicant or conduct an investigation into the applicant's background.
